Carnival Season in Venice, Italy
7 Feb 2010 at 12:15pm

2010 Carnival, or carnevale, season is underway in Venice with festivities through February 16, Shrove Tuesday, when carnival celebrations take place in many parts of the world. If you're in Italy in February, Venice Carnevale, the biggest carnival celebration in Europe, is an event not to be missed.

In Venice, each sestiere or neighborhood hosts carnevale events with public carnival events ranging from small neighborhood parties in a piazza to boat parades along the Grand Canal and masked parades in Saint Mark's Square. There are also extravagant masked balls and dinners, often held in luxury hotels. Just walking around Venice during Carnevale, seeing all the people in masks and costumes, and soaking up the carnival atmosphere is entertainment in itself.

This year the city of Rome is pairing itself with Venice for carnival in Rome. If you can't make it to Venice or Rome, there are many fascinating and unusual Carnevale festivals throughout Italy including parades with elaborate floats, horse races and equestrian events, and an orange throwing battle in the Piedmont town of Ivrea.

Top Museums in Naples, Italy
4 Feb 2010 at 12:03pm

No visit to Naples would be complete without a stop in one of its excellent museums. The National Archaeological Museum of Naples has one of the world's best collections of Greek and Roman artifacts, many of them from the nearby sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Naples has art museums, interesting religious museums that also have small archeological collections, and underground excavations of the old Greek and Roman city that can be toured. Most of the museums are housed in buildings that are interesting themselves as well. If you're planning to travel to Naples, consider visiting these Top Naples Museums.

Naples also has a fascinating historic center and is a good base for day trips to the seaside towns in the Bay of Naples, the charming island of Capri, Mount Vesuvius Volcano, and the many nearby archeological sites.

Lake Maggiore in Italy's Lakes Region
31 Jan 2010 at 2:03pm

Lake Maggiore, in northern Italy's lakes region, is one of Italy's largest and most popular lakes. The long, narrow lake was formed from a glacier and stretches clear into Switzerland. Surrounded by hills in the south and mountains in the north, the lakeside towns maintain a fairly moderate temperature making it possible to visit the lake almost any time of year.

Rome Carnival in 2010
30 Jan 2010 at 5:31pm

Although carnival, or carnevale, is celebrated in many parts of Italy, it has not been commonly celebrated in Rome for the past few centuries. In 2010 Rome will hold carnival festivals, pairing itself with Venice, according to Italy Magazine. Venice is the top place to go for carnevale in Italy and one of the world's top carnival venues. Carnevale events start February 6 in both cities and culminate February 16, 2010.

Lisa Finerty of Secret Gardens Italy told me there's also a good carnevale in Ronciglione near Rome where they have the famous horse race through town but without jockeys. She says, "It is a lot of fun and there are mattresses buffering all the corners in town. They use female horses since they're better behaved. The horses fly, but they must run uphill so it isn't as dangerous as it could potentially be." Sounds like fun.

Cinque Terre Hiking Paths Closed
29 Jan 2010 at 12:47pm

The popular hiking paths between the Cinque Terre, five picturesque villages along the coast of Liguria in northern Italy, are closed due to the recent bad weather and landslides, according to Il Secolo XIX. If plans to repair the trails go well, they should be open by Easter. The trails, or sentieri, are shown in blue on this Cinque Terre Hiking Trails Map and parts of the red trail may also be closed. I think that the short Via dell'Amore portion between Riomaggiore and Manarola is still open. If you plan to travel by train to the villages this might be a good time to go as there will probably be fewer tourists than usual.

Day 18Day 19Day 20Day 21
The past couple of days have been a sort of fiasco. In Siena the internet at the hotel was very flakey. So flakey that I thought it couldn't be the internet so I readjusted my network and somehow completely butchered everything on my computer with regards to the internet while simultaneously my phone unbeknownst to me decided to stop working. Lovely. Of course this was little itty bitty Sie

Day 8 Christmas Day in Rome 2512
Christmas Day. Was a touch miserable for the day after having stayed up so late the previous night but not able to speak to my four children left at home I was told by some of the people on our tour not to worry about it as the kids were probably having fun anyway ... gee that makes me feel better NOTAnyway an early day. Day 7 The roads lead to Rome 2412
It was sad to leave Venice. I could have easily spent more time there but I was excited to head off to Rome for Christmas day. One aside was we were told just before getting to Venice that on Christmas day we would do a mystery present swop so if everyone could purchase a gift to the value of 3 euro and wrap it up to put in the box and at lunch we would all take a lucky dip. I think everyone b

Cooking Class
So perhaps the coolest part about ECCo is that we get cooking lessons from this ridiculously amazing woman. If i had enough money i would take lessons from her for the rest of the semester. 2 weeks ago we had our cooking presentation with her. Which basically means that we assumed meant she might show us how to make cookies and that would be the end of it. however silly us it meant that she w
In fair Verona where we lay our scene
Today a few of us decided to take the train up to Verona which is about an hour and a half from Bologna in Veneto instead of EmiliaRomagna. Verona is where Romeo and Juliet took place and it is absolutely beautiful. It's a very small and manageable city and with the purchase of a map we were able to navigate the city easily. upon arriving there at the train station it is necessary to take a bus

FlashMob
So I don't know how many of you have heard of the Flashmob phenomena. Basically it's a group of people who gather in public places and do this spontaneous coordinated dances. We saw one today.Except in Bologna it cannot be called anything synonomous to spontaneous. Walking through the market Greg called us to tell us that there was a flash mob happening a few blocks down. We quickly head over t

Today we took our first trip outside of Bologna. We went to the city of Ravenna a small city about an hour and a half away by train.
