Florence Restaurant Recommendations
30 Aug 2010 at 11:58am

On our Italy Travel Facebook page, Melissa posted a few restaurants she liked during her recent stay in Florence. She and her family stayed in a vacation rental apartment (through VRBO) in San Frediano neighborhood, across the Arno from the historic center and she says she highly recommends staying in a vacation rental, especially if you're traveling with children. Melissa's recommendations: Alla Vecchia Bettola, the fried zucchini flowers were a miracle but the place, in keeping with the spirit of historic foods, doesn't take credit cards. Trattoria del Carmine was a favorite for the affable service, traditional food, and the fact that my kids could melt down and they were very kind. Enoteca La Barrique on Via Leone was fantastic - brand new, modern food vision of a non-Italian chef, has a small, intimate garden in the back, love it. The food was superlative. Trattoria Sabatino is a hoot, a real neighborhood place. Hard to get in (in July) but a delightful place to dine. One restaurant outside of Florence we return to year after year is Da Ventura in Sansepulcro, a lovely family has been running this restaurant for 3 generations. They have wonderful fresh pasta and the antipasto cart is not to be believed. Gelato: Gelateria Artigianale Sorbettiera is an extraordinary artisanal gelato maker on Piazza Tasso. My husband still loves Perche No! near Piazza Signoria off Via Calzaioli. Share: What's Your Favorite Place in Florence?

Italy Travel Tips - Credit Cards and Cash
30 Aug 2010 at 10:36am

On our Italy Travel Facebook page, a reader who just returned from a month in Florence warns that some small, family-run restaurants don't take credit cards so if you want to get away from the tourist restaurants you may need to pay with cash. She stayed in a vacation apartment in Florence's San Frediano neighborhood (across the Arno) and says: Alla Vecchia Bettola was right around the corner and the fried zucchini flowers were a miracle -- but the place, in keeping with the spirit of historic foods, doesn't take credit cards. It's remarkably difficult to find places to change cash and exchange services are tough on fees. Plus, unlike the past, many regular banks won't change money anymore. I've found that the easiest way to get cash these days is by using my ATM card in a bancomat, but to avoid problems be sure to call your bank to let them know you'll be using your ATM card (and your credit card) in a foreign country. Read more about Using ATM Cards in Italy and How to Safeguard Your Money.

Michelangelo is one of Italy's most famous Renaissance artists and many of his great works, including his statue of David, can be seen in the city of Florence. A replica of Michelangelo's David sits outside Palazzo Vecchio, Florence's city hall, but the original can be seen in a Florence museum. 21 Aug 2010 at 2:06pm

Stan Douglas, of Palio Tours (who also offer a Milan and Verona Opera Tour), suggested that I remind readers to book two to three months ahead if they want to see Da Vinci's popular masterpiece, the Last Supper, in Milan. Stan says, "getting in there has become even more difficult that obtaining Palio tickets!" If you can't get tickets for the date you want, one company has started offering a few last minute tickets when they have them available. Find out how to book in my article, How to get tickets to the Last Supper.

First day in Rome
Greatings from Roma I've only been here about a day but I think I'm in love already. It's so gorgeous We got into the airport around 5 30 last night and then took a bus to our hostel with a group of German students who it turned out knew every word to Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas. Kinda makes a case for the arts transcending language and culture. The hostel was kind of cute set up

La Prima Domenica in Italia
I cannot even BELIEVE it's been just four days since I arrived in Italy. So much has happened. I'm in a constant state of being stunned silent confused feeling stupid and trying to find humor in the stunned silence confusion and stupidity. And I can't possibly be turning 21 on tuesday because I feel like a 2 month old. My communication skills are that of a tiny baby. When I got on the plane I
I love Florence
Florence Italy is one of my favorite places I've been up to date. The first time I visited the city was actually my first time visiting Europe. I was 19 years old and signed up for Italian courses at the Instituto Michaelangelo. The program was 4 weeks and I rented a studio apartment right off Via Ghibelina by myself. I arrived at the airport and was received by the program coordinator who handed
Heart of Glass
An earlier start for today as we headed out straight after breakfast to Arsenale to catch the vaporetto to Murano. The 40 minute journey was pleasant as we were able to see another part of the island as well as the cemetery island. At Murano we wandered along the streets window shopping and revelling in the relative serenity of the island which has fewer tourists than Venice. We eventually found

Well this is to be my last full day in Roma . I love it herehellip. You will probably see me write this at every place I get to. But for now I Love Roma. Not enough to buy one of the gaudy tshirts they have saying this but enough to say that I think it could live here. There is something about walking past these fantastico places as part of your normal day. I am sitting in a back alley toni
Last day in Rome

Seems to be working for us over here My feet felt much better when I got up and really good once I drained another blister from the bottom of my big toe...my right foot had a total of 5it's got so many bandaids that I told Ted that I looked like Les Nessman gone wild WKRP reference. Art in Venice
Today started slowly with breakfast followed by postcard writing. At around 10am we wandered down to the Arsenale vaporetto stop and caught a vaporetto to Galleria dell' Accademia which is the main art gallery in Venice or so I understand it to be. As with the other paintings we'd seen there were primarily religious paintings with a smattering of mythology paintings thrown in. The space itsel
Romathe city of sore feet
We have spent our first full day here in Rome. Our BB is in an old section of not to be confused with Ancient Rome. We have a room on the 4th floor5th in the USwith no air conditioning. Two rooms share a bath down the hallvery easy so far. It's about 90 during the day and very muggy. Last night it dropped to only about 70. I slept hard till about 4am and then I was wide awake. Fun.
Day 45 Roma
I was up early this morning to make my way to the Vatican yet another place on my previous Roman jaunt I did not see enough of. I made my way through the Vatican Museum for 5 hours. My feet are now killing me and I seek out any seat to sit whilst I listen to my audio guide. Now I admit I followed a flag today. I am not a big flag follower ie group tour guide however I booked one to avoid the
Unmasking Venice
We started our day with a light breakfast in the hotel and then set out to walk along the promenade alongside the Bacino di San Marco. We passed by the Arsenale which is a large military structure that is still in use. We got to the promenade just as most of the tourist boats were coming in which made for an interesting sight and a crowded walk. At the Piazza San Marco the line for the Basilica
God Gave Me an Angel Hopping Off to Corsica
In my last blog I made it sound like I just ldquohopped offrdquo to France... And ldquohopping offrdquo to France sounded like a lovely idea when the decision was made but unfortunately there was really no ldquohopping offrdquo involved. No quick little bunnylike hops or anything like that. It was more like a tired donkey carrying an old lady 5 times its size with all of her belo
