Hey all
Bob from VA here

I work as a server in a restaurant in Richmond, VA. I see all kinds of tech all the time. I see Iphones every once in a while. I saw a Kindle the other day, but one thing I see every day multiple times a day is the Droid. I counted today and I saw 4 different guests with them.

Next random thought: Opera whined enough to get the browser ballet into Windows, so they may be the ones up to challenging Apples app store rules.

Sounds like I am bashing Apple a bit here, but I have a touch and love it. Now I’m off to play Plants vs Zombies on it. Since your done reading this you should do the same.

LOVE THE SHOW!

**********

First I must say, I am not an Opera fanboy, and I apologize if I am
one of many who points this out.

Apple contacted Opera Software when they first announced Opera Mini
for the iPhone.
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=no&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.digi.no%2F835579%2Fapple-ringte-opera
(Translated by GoogleTranslate)
This does not nessisarily mean it will get approved, but how many
developers receeves a phone call from Apple.

The technical difference with Opera Mini and a real webbrowser might
be enought to get safely through the review process. When a page is
loaded in Opera Mini it goes through servers where it is rendered and
compressed. Your phone receeves a binary blob which is renderd by the
phone. From the endusers perspective there is no difference though. So
webrendering is not done on the phone but operas servers.

Website — (HTML/CSS/JS etc.) —> Opera servers, rendering and
compression — (Small Binary Blob) —> your ISP — (Small Binary
Blob) —> Mobile nettwork — (Small Binary Blob) —> Your phone

This means you can not have a direct encrypted connection with a
website though, So you should not use this with your bank. Though it
does reduce the data sendt over the carrier nettwork. (Not everyone
has an all you can eat data plan.)

Opera Mini should not be confused with Opera Mobile, a real
webbrowser, which will probably never get approved.

Love the show
Dan, from Norway

Regarding Pink Floyd: What a bunch of whiners! Why don’t they just release the album as two large tracks like Mike Olefeild did for Tubular Bells (many years ago) or BT did for his latest album ( this year – ‘These hopeful machines’).

Hey Buzz Crew!

I have been a listener for a long time, and recently with the increased talk about ACTA, I have decided to do something about it. What can a nobody like me do to stop this treaty, you ask? Why, create a Facebook group of course! The link is here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&gid=387879991802 .

I think the biggest problem here is not enough people know what ACTA is. I think that a Facebook group might just help with that.

Lets fight this thing by spreading the word.

Patent law does have it’s place in society, and we do need it to protect, not only the big company but the small company. While there may be problems with the system, change to the system must be gradual and measured. Wholesale removal of the system re: software patents would result in a host of unintended consequences as well as the removal of billions, if not trillions, of capital assets.

Yes, big companies use their patent stick to beat off little companies. But what mechanism would you propose be used by a big company to prevent a little company from stealing something and implementing it quickly and confusing the marketplace. If there was a device that looked like an iPhone and kind worked like one, but which Apple couldn’t remove from the marketplace, the harm to Apple’s reputation would be immeasurable. Both in marketshare and in reputation. Patents are one method that they use to protect themselves. And patents at the corporate level are negotiating tools, nothing more. If Apple is suing HTC, one of the end results may be a revenue stream to Apple. Look at QualComm. They don’t manufacture handsets anymore but they are still making money.

Perhaps, the duration of patents with respect to software is too long. And yes, the courts don’t understand this newfangled Internet tubes we use. Congress doesn’t either, to be honest.

The debate on the show, which is a little bit one-sided has been going on for a long time and will be going on for a long while. It’s just the nature of the beast. Shakespeare said that the first step in overthrowing the government was to kill all the lawyers. We are here to protect people and society. Some of us may abuse that privilege but most of us are good stewards of it.

Cheers,
Bob

Hey Buzz Crew,

On Episode 1182, you talked about a new way for your boss to track what
you’re doing. Well, I already figured out a “hack” to make sure your boss
doesn’t know what you’re doing! What’s required? A Roomba and something to
hold your phone down. All you do is tie your phone to the Roomba, and
whenever you want to go out somewhere, turn the Roomba on (with the phone
attached of course). That way you will be moving around, and your boss
won’t think you’re dead! Make sure you find a Roomba or some robot that
can also go up and down the stairs so your boss doesn’t think you’re
pacing back and forth all the time.

This is Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ from Washington DC. (PadreSJ in the chatroom)

In episode 1181 (@ 3:29) Brian Cooley poo poos the introduction the Cisco CRS-3, saying “They do all this assuming the entire Internet is populated with these. I mean they forget this is the fastest thing on the Internet and the Internet runs as slow as the slowest gateway on the Internet. So until this hardware propagates everywhere this will be sitting around drumming its fingers like a bunch of older hardware.”

(Please have Molly read this in her Nerd voice — for this is most certainly nerdy)

While the “weakest link” analogy is most often the case when speaking of advancements in IT, where the technology will only work as fast as its slowest component, it isn’t true in a case of this scale. It helps to think of an ISP as an outwardly concentric network comprised of the “core” (the center) and “edge” (the part of the network that actually connects to customers.) — The edge networks have been fast enough for years, with most user’s bandwidth needs not scraping the sides of a even a 10 Megabit connection to the ISP. However, as you get closer to the core all those millions of 10 Megabit connections quickly overwhelm (oversubscribe) the core router. With the Cisco announcement of the CRS-3, an ISP could now serve 3,220,000 customers with a 100 Megabit link without oversubscribing and WITHOUT DEPLOYING THEM EVERYWHERE. Put a few of these in key places in the core, and bip-bam-boom, you’ve got yourself a next-gen network capable of downloading every episode of BOL directly into the brains of our future army of Cylon babies.

More to the point, as long as there are at least two of these deployed in an Enterprise or ISP-class network, they will never be “drumming their fingers.”

Peace,
Fr. Robert

Regarding the rejected ad, I’ve provided a link to the Microsoft adCenter editorial guidelines.
http://help.live.com/Help.aspx?market=en-US&project=adcenter_live_Std&querytype=topic&query=MOONSHOT_CONC_EditorialTrademarks.htm
Basically, Here is what the page says:
Trademarks
You are responsible for obtaining permission to use any trademarks in your ads. Microsoft adCenter will not serve as a mediator between trademark owners and advertisers interested in using trademarks in their ad campaigns.
Microsoft adCenter does not allow you to bid on as a keyword, or use in the content of your ads:
Any term whose use would infringe the trademark of any third party or otherwise be unlawful or in violation of the rights of any third party.
Microsoft adCenter might allow the use of a third-party trademark if its use is truthful and lawful, for example if:
You are a reseller whose website sells authentic goods or services that are distributed under the trademark.
Your website provides information (for example, product reviews) about goods or services represented by the trademark, and your principal offering is not the sale of any product or service that competes with the goods or services represented by the trademark.
You are clearly using the ordinary, dictionary use of a term, and your principal offering is not the sale of any product or service that competes with the goods or services represented by the trademark.

Anyway… It doesn’t look like Microsoft was Censoring because iPHone is a competitor, because if you go to bing.com and search for adwords, you will see that Google is actually an advertiser… if Microsoft wanted to censor, you’d think they’d deny Google’s ad.

Lastly, Tom you were correct, Amazon stopped the associates program in North Carolina because of the taxes, I was an associate in NC and they cut me off. I fixed it by getting a UPS store mail box in South Carolina(two miles from me) and using that address for my associates account, and viola I’m back in the associates program…

Buzz Crew,

Just thought this link would be of interest. http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article7053254.ece

Seems like Howard Schmidt is the only one in the world who thinks there is no cyberwar.

I have attended NSA briefings from the people who manage the operations/response center and they are very clear about the levels of attacks and the sophistication of those attacks. It is bad and getting worse. These are not independent hackers but nation states.

The FBI even says that attacks on government web sites alone are now at 1.6 Billion a month. That is billion with a “B”.

The British equivalent of NSA, GCHQ is mentioned in the above article.

So much for feeling safe.

Hi Buzz Crew,

Love hearing the old gang back together again!

With censorship being a hot topic in the news lately, I thought you might like to see this. I recently tried to place some Pay Per Click advertisements on Bing using the Microsoft Ad Center. Once the ads were created, I was told that they needed to be reviewed before they would be turned live on the search engine. This is something Google does as well with their AdWords program, most likely to prevent obvious fraud or hate messages.

Imagine my surprise when I received the attached message a few days later. All three of my ads were rejected. Why? Because they included the word “iPhone”.

We in the tech community are quick to admonish Apple for it’s censorship in the App Store — and rightfully so. It would seem that Microsoft is just as guilty. The iPhone may be a competitor to the Zune and Windows Mobile 7 Classic Pink Phone thingy, but shouldn’t their search engine be unbiased?

I see a dangerous trend developing here…

Hey Buzz crew,

Recently you talked about an increase in android market share this year, and I thought I would share my experience:

We allow employees to use their personal smart to sync with our network for email, and calendar. Well last year I help set up pretty much all Iphones (with the exception of one Palm Pre), but this year the only phones I've helped users with are Android based phones, even more astonishing is that they are all different devices, no one is buying the same model android phone, I've set up Motorola Cliqs, Droids, HTC Droid Eris, HTC Hero, and the Samsung Moment.

No Nexus one yet, but I think a lot of that has to do with not being able to just walk in to a store and play with it.

Love the Show!

I checked my email this morning and found I can no longer be an Amazon Associate because I live in Colorado. Essentially, in Colorado if a company has a “controlled group” that makes money in Colorado, then they are considered to have a “presence in this state”. The bill would require Amazon to charge sales tax on all Colorado sales. Interestingly enough I never heard about this from Amazon or locally (and I’m a daily newspaper reader)! If I had a heads up I would have wrote my congress. Are there other companies that will suffer from this, or was it targeted directly at Amazon?

http://www.leg.state.co.us/CLICS/CLICS2010A/csl.nsf/fsbillcont3/B30F574193882B4B872576A80026BE0C?Open&file=1193_rev.pdf

Good thing I don’t depend on making money from the associate program, or I would be out of luck.

Thanks, and great show!

Molly,

Why would anyone want to develop for the iPhone/iPad? For the same reason that people develop for the Xbox, or the PS3 (particularly services like the PSN and Xbox Live Arcade). This kind of treatment of developers happens all the time in the console gaming development cycle, it just happens behind closed doors most of the time. That doesn’t mean it isn’t wrong, but Apple’s “treatment” of developers is hardly unprecedented and because of that it’s unlikely to negatively impact the number of developers who want to develop for their platforms.

Besides, I think all this housecleaning is leading up to something. What? I don’t know, but it seems odd for them to suddenly pounce on certain apps and certain kinds of apps without warning. I foresee some major changes to their app store (and app submission process) coming soon – maybe more clarity on what apps will and will not be accepted?

Anyway, love the show, and Molly’s rants!

(Oh and also Molly, you mentioned that you don’t think the iPad will sell very well and I have UNDENIABLE, SCIENTIFIC PROOF that you’re wrong! In Mass Effect 2 (which is, in the future) everyone is walking around with an iPad-esque tablety device! SCIENCE.)

Hi buzz crew,

I was just listening to the episode 1177 where you talking about the new TIVO’s and how if you wanted wifi you would need to buy a $90 add on. I thought I’d share with you what I’ve done to get around buying all the add on adapters companies try to nickel and hundred dollar you to death. I use an Apple Airport Express to extend my wifi to my home theatre and I’ve connected a 8 port switch to it. While this setup is technically more at roughly $125 the Airport Express gives you AirTunes which is a pretty cool feature. I currently have my Xbox, an older PS3 that has wireless G and Slingbox connected this way all thinking they`re wired with plenty of room to expand my wireless living room. If you wanted to save some money you could always configure a $50 wireless router as a wifi extender and use the 4 wired ports in the back.

Hope this helps,

love the show!!!

Buzz Crew:

On episode 1178, the discussion about Apple’s patents made me think what would have happened to the
automobile industry if Henry Ford had patented his ideas.

According to wikipedia, Ford was the first to place the steering wheel on the left, in the Model T,
and all other automobile companies soon copied that idea. Imagine if Ford had patented steering
wheel placement, and all other car companies has been prevented from placing the steering wheel on
the left of the vehicle?

That may too trivial an example … so what if Ford had patented the idea of an assembly line?
Would modern industry even exist?

On today's show, Apple wants to wipe all HTC phones from the face of the earth, apparently because Steve Jobs is just grouchy about this whole business. Donald and Molly engage in a nice long talk about the validity of software patents, and then we wonder whether anyone would actually line up to buy a new 3D HDTV. Meanwhile, the well-meaning House of Lords is probably going to destroy the Internet.

Hey Buzz Crew,

I know you guys aren’t big fans of the Blackberry Storm, but I think this newly reported form factor is pretty interesting. As a former BB user (Storm – terrible, Tour – sweet, Droid – well, does!), I think that this hardware combo could be huge. It’s also reported to be running OS 6.0 (but fails imo with an expected 360×480 screen resolution).

Was it Tom that predicted Palm will be bought out in 2010? Hmm WebOS + BBEmail could be the spark RIM needs to drive more handsets into the consumer bases, outside of enterprise. If RIM were smart, they’d pull a MS and work from the ground up.

These photos have been out for a day or two, but hadn’t heard you mention anything.

Rogers the CEO of was quoted in a Light Reading article as saying:

"The new platform won’t be available to DirecTV Group Inc. (NYSE: DTV) subscribers, since the satellite TV giant uses an older version of TiVo software in its DVRs. But Rogers said TiVo is creating a new software for DirecTV DVRs that will add some new functions.

“Their [DirecTV's] next implementation of us is not going to have this look and feel. It’s based on the classic TiVo,” he said.

Hi JaMoTo. I’m Rodrigo from Chile (Santiago) and i wanted to send you information for future natural or human caused disasters.
there is a Kenyan service called Ushahidi (means “testimony” in Swahili),which basically collects info related to a catastrophe by mail, sms and twitter and then filters it so there are no duplicate results to then place it into a map.
the value to this service is to stay informed and for rescue services to locate people in immediate need of help or rescue.
i came across this service recently but apparently local emergency response services have used it successfully to assist people.
i tell you this so others know about this and if or when they may see themselves involed in something like this they know where to ask for assistance or how to help.
this service has been used in Kenya, Congo and Haiti and has proven to be extremely valuable.
btw, twitter wasn’t much of value and old land line phones along with regular radio were my information source right after the earthquake. another good reason to keep good old technologies with us.

Hey BOL crew! Theres been a lot of talk recently about the arbitrary Apple App Store policies and their rejecting of random apps. It seems to me that if Apple really wanted this control, what they should have done from the beginning is use the gaming console model for the iPhone. Everyone knows and pretty much accepts that Nintendo controls exactly what types of games are allowed on the DS, and Sony wont allow a Wobble iBoobs type app anytime soon on the PSP. Portable consoles are really expensive to develop for and entirely controlled by the manufacturer for better or for worse.
So I think Apples problem is they opened it up so much that it seems too much like an open platform, and now people feel like they should be able to put whatever type of app they want on it. I think Apple got themselves in to this mess and now they have to live with it. Give up the battle and allow the users to decide, otherwise the exodus to places like Android wont be long in coming!

OK, so the violin analogy wasn’t perfect!

So, at the risk of being re-mocked, here’s an improved analogy: Let’s
say CNet decides to do away with the familiar guitar music that opens
the show. Instead, JaMoTo will open the show by singing a cute little
Buzz Out Loud jingle each day--in harmony! Oh, and you have to write
the jingle. And it has to change every week. Don’t want to do that one
little thing to humanize the show?? Typical techie attitude!

OK, same problem… that may not help the show! But I stand by the
original point: let’s not take it for granted that everyone should
feel as comfortable (or competent) doing the things that come very
naturally to us.

Dude buzz crew get your history straight. WWI was started because some Serbian nationalist guy shot a Duke from Austria and then everyone had deals with each other so as soon as the two countries went to war all of friggin Europe went to war. Although this would be a perfect analogy if then Google, (and possibly other Android manufacturers who are worried about getting sued) jump in, where as if they wait to be sued before entering, then it is more like WWII where a lot of countries didn’t really get involved until they were attacked or threatened. Anyways love the show

I hate to nitpick, but Modern Warfare 2 is not the best selling game in history. New Super Mario Bros on the DS has outsold MW2. Nintendogs, Pokemon, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Bros. Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, and a whole lot more.

Sure it's sold a lot, but it is not even close to being the biggest selling game in history. Please don't say such things if you don't know if you are correct or not..

Hey Buzz,

I think we will find out that the Zune 30 and PS3 outage have the same thing in common. A toshiba chip will be found to be incorrectly checking for leap year. This is causing the computer to come up with an out of range date. For security reasons this causes a failure to connect to PSN. Poor coding in a third party component is causing this. The newer PS3 models are using a different chip altogther or it has been condensed into another chip. This is why you do not need to be on the internet for it to take effect. You only need your clock set correctly. It happened about midnight GMT. So this means it is calculating time in GMT, probalbly minutes and seconds since Jan 1, 2000.

——

Last week I submitted an application to the Apple App Store called “DuckPhone”. The application is simple, you can tap to hear the sound of a Duck quacking, and you can send the sound as a ringtone. It is based on a meme that arose from a television show, but that detail is somewhat irrelevant. Admitidly, the application is of limited functionality, but I think there are many people who would enjoy it, so I submitted it to Apple. To my surprise, I received the following email:

“Dear Atlantia Software LLC,

We’ve reviewed your application DuckPhone and we have determined that this application contains minimal user functionality and will not be appropriate for the App Store.

If you would like to share it with friends and family, we recommend you review the Ad Hoc method on the Distribution tab of the iPhone Developer Portal for details on distributing this application among a small group of people of your choosing or if you believe that you can add additional user functionality to DuckPhone we encourage you to do so and resubmit it for review.

Sincerely,

iPhone App Review Team”

Seriously? My jaw literally dropped as I read this. Yes, the application is limited in functionality, but it does not violate any of the terms I agreed to when I became an iPhone Developer. This application harms nobody, but rather than let it live or die on it’s own merit, Apple has decided to now move into an even more gray area, where it can approve or reject applications based on its subjective view of what is or isn’t useful. How is this application more or less useful than the hundreds of fart applications, some that have sold millions of copies. How is this application more or less useful than the countless re-distribution of single books as applications. How is this application more or less useful than countless other applications that provide limited functionality, but were still graciously approved by Apple?

This is a line I had hoped would not be crossed, but sadly it has been. I’m not sending this email because the world will be deprived if they can’t experience this application, but rather, in hopes that some or all of you will publish this story so that the public at large continues to hear about the ridiculous behavior of Apple in matters such as these. As time goes on, this platform is becoming more of a burden on developers, this will in turn lead to talented people moving on to more open platforms. In the end, the customer loses, and I sincerely hope Apple will realize this.

Thank you for listening,
Nick
