Stromboli Volcano
A visit to the Aeolian island Stromboli.Stromboli is a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the north coast of Sicily containing one of the three active volcanoes in Italy. Stromboli is remarkable because of the length of time in which it has been in almost continuous eruption. For at least the last 20000 years the same pattern of eruption has been maintained in which explosions occur at the

I never saw so may Smart cars in any European country than in Italy.Supposing there are also a lot of them on the mainland of Italy for sure on the islands Sardinia and Sicily it s a lot.The Italians say it s for easy parking. But why only Italy sees this as a soltution Other countries solve the problem by using bigger cars and building more parking lots.Had dinner yesterday in Caffe del Duomo. A

Catania War Cemetry
Was hoping that my eye would have recovered overnight. Unfortunately it had not so I had to cancel the excursion up Mount Etna and play hunt the hospital instead. There are lots and you have to have the right one oh and follow the Italian instructions to get there. Anyway after a morning of standing in queues I realised that I was more bored than in pain so we continued with our journey. To ma

Clodia is old
Clodia was the name of the ferry who brought me from Cagliari to Napoli with a delay of 25 hours. Clodia has been beautifull probably in her youth over 50 years agobut was too big and old now for the few passengers.Only the garage fully loaded with trucks was important for her.To reach Clodia as pedistrian you hald to walk under a terrible sun and avoid the truck traffick that was every where
Day 22 A day trip to Sicily
Today has been a long and tiring day. Up at 4 am but awake at 2.30 am to leave at 5 am to get the 7 am catamaran to Sicily for our day trip.We managed to get a good parking spot just outside the sea terminal gates so no fees to pay. The trip was Sicily was about 90 minutes and the Med was as smooth as can be. We had a couple of cups of coffee and breakfast on board. This was a much bigger vessel
The Mystery of the Breadboard or Losing Things when You Travel
A couple of weeks ago we were trundling along the Puglia coast and decided to pull up by the sea for lunch. And that was the last time either of us saw the cutting board we are both of the preslice bread age and therefore tend to call them all ldquobreadboardsrdquo. It was a good breadboard actually it was one of those square things with a short handle you use to take pizzas out of the ov
And So To Sicilia
Only those who have worked for a long time in one of Charlie's buildings and there may be only one reader of this blog who still does will appreciate why I almost wanted to go to the town of Randazzo and have a look just to see whether his origins suggest some answers for the way he operates. It is not just old Charlie. We have a town called Nicolosi of Guiseppe fame Sciacca as in Con and
Sicily continued
Yes the fibrecast cast is off the foot thanks to all your wellwishes. Weilding my little travel knife I sawed through it and probably gave the poor cleaner a shock when she would have cleared the bathroom rubbish tin out the next day. An elastic sport support has taken its place. After leaving Palermo we travelled along the northern coast to Cefalu and then on to the mountain town of Roca. With
Sicily
Compared to Naples the architecture is in a similar state of crumbling disrepair in Palermo if you look closely you can even still see marks where bullets struck buildings during WW2. However the people are more vibrant here than Naples the atmosphere friendly and Irsquove yet to step on a single dog crap. Then there is no army of illegal African immigrants annoying you every few metres to bu

Sicily Day 4 Catania
By this day we had pretty much exhausted Taormina and had heard good things about Catania so we decided to take the hour bus ride there.Everyone who said good things about Catanialied. Catania is probably the one place I left in Italy and says that I have absolutely no desire to go back to. Now i am sure it is probably nice if you live there. but for tourists it is not a good city. especially if
Sicily Day 3 the Beach Taormina and Castelmola
The sun was shining once again when we woke up and today was supposed to be the warmest in the morning so we made plans to go to the beach because even though it was colder than we would like we had to at least see the Sicilian beach. To get to the Taormina beach you can take a cable car from the top to the bottom aka down a mountain which all my friends seemed to think was an awesome idea
Sicilia Day 2 Taormina
So I was the big pusher of going to Taormina during spring break. i had gone there five years ago and absolutely loved it. i went in high school and absolutely fell in love with the town. it was the first place we stopped on our tour and after a hellish day of traveling that included a flight that got overbooked and everyone's luggage being lost we woke up to a ridiculously gorgeous view and spen
